Todo Backup 7, new smart backup feature and interface

Todo Backup Free made our top drive backup list recently. EaseUS, the company behind the product, has released version 7.0 which introduces several new features and improvements.

The backup program is still available as a free version that you can use for the majority of backup related tasks. While there are Home and Workstation editions available that are not free, they add only features to the application that are usually not requested by the majority of users.

When it comes to creating backups, Todo Backup Free is sufficient for the majority.

When you start the program after installation you will immediately notice the new interface that it ships with. New interfaces don't always improve a program but that is not the case here.

The available backup options are listed at the top. Here you can select to backup a hard drive or partition, do file or system backups, or use the new smart backup feature that has been integrated into version 7.0 of the software.

The first three options are more or less self-explanatory. Disk/Partition backup provides you with the means to backup an entire hard drive or a hard drive partition. File backup lets you pick files and folders that you want backed up regularly, and system backup will backup the system partition, that is the drive Windows is installed on.

Smart Backup is new on the other hand. It looks similar to File Backup on first glance, and the core difference between the two is that Smart Backup will update the backup whenever changes are noticed in source folders or in source files.

It can be compared to file synchronization programs which act in a similar fashion.

Last but not least, you get the clone option. It enables you to clone a source hard drive using a destination hard drive of your choosing. This is an excellent option if you want to migrate data from a drive to another one. Examples where this may make sense is to move data from an older hard drive to a larger one, or the system drive to a fast Solid State Drive.

Before you start any backup, you may want to run a couple of tasks prior to that. First, you may want to click on tools and select the option to create an emergency repair disc.

You can use the disc to boot into the backup program even if Windows itself does not start properly anymore. If you plan to backup hard drives or the system partition, it is a must.

The settings are surprisingly light, and you find options for each individual backup method the program supports when you select those options.

Many of the features that Todo Backup Free offers are only available then. It is for instance possible to encrypt or compress backups, restore only select files instead of a full backup, or select the preferred backup method -- full, incremental or differential -- that you want used.

Conclusion

The new version of Todo Backup Free improves the program only marginally. While Smart Backup is an interesting addition to the program, it is not really a new feature since file sync programs have offered it for a long time.

That does not mean that the program is not excellent and offers lots of value to users who don't want to spend money on a paid program. Heck, there are commercial backup solutions out there that support less than this program does.
