Nvidia GeForce Driver 381.65 with Windows 10 Creators Update support

The Nvidia GeForce Driver 381.65 adds support for the Windows 10 Creators Update, and the newly released Nvidia Titan Xp video card.

While you can run older versions of the Nvidia GeForce driver on machines that run the Windows 10 Creators Update, version 381.65 is the first to introduce official support for the newest version of Windows 10.

Note: Windows Defender SmartScreen may block the driver downloader or execution by default. You need to select the more link when the Windows protected your PC screen is displayed, and then run anyway to run the driver installation. The main issue right now is that the driver that is provided on the Nvidia website is corrupt. It won't extract properly. The download should have a size of 415 Megabytes for Windows 10, but the download offered on Nvidia's site has a size of only 304 Megabytes.

The new Nvidia GeForce Driver 381.65 supports 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows 7 and newer versions of Windows only. Windows XP and Vista are not supported.

The new driver version adds support for the following new features:

  1. Support for Windows 10 Creators Update with WDDM 2.2 support. WDDM 2.2 is a new version of Windows Display Driver Model that has been introduced in the Creators Update by Microsoft. It is tailored for virtual, augmented and mixed reality for the Windows Holographic platform and DXGI 1.6.
  2. Support for the new Nvidia Titan Xp video card.
  3. Support for Dolby Vision in games.
  4. Support for DTS X and Dolby Atmos for 5.1.2 speaker configuration.
  5. Support for Quake Champions Closed Beta.
  6. Two new Nvidia Control Panel options
    1. Option to override the desktop color control of Windows 10.
    2. Option added to disable the self-refresh power saving feature of G-Sync (applies only to self-refresh capable notebooks using Pascal-based GPUs).

The driver has quite a few known issues. One affects installation, as it may fail if install the new version over the old one. The workaround for this is to run a clean installation instead.

You need to select custom installation when setup opens, and check the "perform a clean installation" option then on the next screen to do so.

It is highly recommended that you uncheck any driver component that you don't require. If you don't use 3D for instance, you may want to disable the 3D Vision Controller Driver and the 3D Vision Driver.

Closing Words

Unless you require one of the new features introduced by the Nvidia GeForce 381.65 driver, it may be best to wait until Nvidia resolves the download issue, and maybe releases an updated version of the driver with fewer issues.

Now You: Do you install video card drivers right away, or wait?
