More than 1000 new Arcade games added to Internet Archive

The Internet Archive has just added more than 1000 new arcade games to the Internet Arcade. Revealed in 2014 for the first time as a way to preserve classic computer and arcade games, and provide users with options to play these games using emulation, it is now one of the largest arcade sites on the Internet.

The more than 1000 new games added to the archive are all arcade games which means that they have been produced for arcades and not home entertainment systems such as the NES or Sega Genesis.

Arcade games differ from emulated console and PC games that the Internet Archive hosts as well even though some arcade games have been ported to consoles and even the computer. The core difference is that players had to pay to play these games. While that is not necessary anymore when you play them on the Internet Archive site, you will notice that many are designed as money sinks.

There is no option usually to save a game and while you can tap on 6 to add more credits to a game, you will notice that many of these games are quite difficult and challenging as many have been designed specifically for revenue generation.

Head over to the Internet Archive website to browse the games that were added to the arcade recently.

You may not know most of the games as many were only available in select regions and not worldwide.

You will find a good selection of classics and hidden gems on the list produced by SNK, Namco, Sega, Capcom and others, however.

As far as games are concerned, you will find games like Street Fighter Alpha 2, Metal Slug 5, 1942, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Galaga '88 which most gamers probably have heard about. The archive hosts gems like Batsugun, Super-X, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, or DoDonPachi as well.

Games support keyboard and joystick input. You add credits to the game with a tap on 6 and select a one or two player game with a tap on 1 or 2 respectively. I suggest that you switch on fullscreen mode when you play games as the game screen is quite tiny otherwise. Just hit the fullscreen button on the Archive webpage to do so.

Most games are controlled with the arrow keys on the keyboard and Ctrl or Space. Some may have mapped actions to different keys and it is a bit unfortunate that a list of supported keys is not provided for every game.

You can search the entire archive or use filters to display games by year, subject or creator. Game content and the emulator get loaded when you click on the play button on the game screen.

Closing Words

The selection of arcade games is large enough to provide entertainment to any gamer regardless of personal preferences. You find shoot 'em up, sports, puzzle, action, or jump and run games in abundance on the site and the ever growing list of supported games.
