Firefox may get a unified search and address bar soon

Mozilla's Firefox browser is one of the few browsers left standing that displays an address bar and search bar by default in its interface.

Ever since Google Chrome was launched, most browsers merged search functionality into the address bar, likely to save space and limit interface elements.

Firefox users can search using the browser's address bar or the search bar. What's interesting about this is that it is still possible -- with some tweaks -- to use different providers.

Restrict app data on cellular networks on Android

One of the negative side effects of my cheap mobile subscription is that I only have 200 Megabytes of free high speed mobile data per month after which the speed is artificially limited to snail-like speed.

While apps and the device appear to use wireless connections whenever available, they don't have any issues transferring data if WiFi is not enable but cellular data is.

Lookeen Free Desktop Search is now available

Lookeen is a powerful desktop search for Windows systems that requires the Microsoft .Net Framework 4.0. Up until now, it was only available as a commercial version. This changes with today's release of Lookeen Free, a feature-limited version of the program that anyone can download and use.

The free version uses the same technology as the paid version of Lookeen. The core difference between both versions is the limitation to drive-c in the free version.

Firefox’s Power Close makes closing tabs a tad easier and faster

Power Close for the Firefox browser is a useful add-on for users of the browser who have more than a handful of websites open in the browser at any point in time.

If you regularly have dozens or even hundreds of tabs open in Firefox, you may find useful what it brings to the table.

The add-ons main feature is the ability to close multiple tabs at once based on keywords you enter.

A keyword can be anything including words, domain names and even protocols.

Some examples:

The ultimate bookmarks guide

Bookmarks tend to grow over time if you are making use of the feature that every modern and not so modern browser supports at least to a degree.

Bookmarks are links that point to local or remote resources that open when they are activated in the browser.

They are easy enough to manage if only a handful exist but if you sit on hundreds or even thousands of bookmarks that accumulated over years, you may end up with duplicates and dead links.

Bookmark Manager AM-Deadlink discontinued and crippled

Whenever I hit d in Firefox's address bar I get a suggestion to open the Download Squad website. The site has not been around for a long time but I never found the time to delete it from the bookmarks.

AM-Deadlink is a third-party bookmark manager that I used in the past for that purpose. The first review of the program dates back to 2006 here on ComTek4u and I have used it since (irregularly) for that purpose.

What you do when Firefox uses too much memory

Firefox's memory usage has been a hot topic ever since it was released. The main complaint is that the browser users too much RAM while running.

Some users experience issues because of this, for instance slow downs on their system, while others may not notice any issues but still want something done about it.

Back in the days, memory leaks were one of the main causes for the browser's high memory usage.

Mozilla fixed these leaks in the core browser and most extension authors fixed memory leaks in their add-ons as well.

The best music streaming extensions for Google Chrome

I don't listen to music on the computer when I'm working as I find it too distracting. I do like to play music on the other hand in the background when I use the computer for entertainment, for web browsing, shopping or games.

My personal favorite are Internet radio stations that I can tune in but there are certainly plenty of other options available.

From playing local or cloud music that you own over playing music on sites like YouTube or Soundcloud to using specialized streaming services such as Spotify.

The easiest way to save videos on Facebook

Facebook is one of the largest video hosting and streaming sites on the Internet. It is held back somewhat by missing options to embed most videos on third-party websites (you can embed videos that you have uploaded but not videos by other users).

The company uses different technologies to serve video contents to Facebook users. By default, it is using Adobe Flash on most systems for that.
