Microsoft releases tool to hide or block unwanted Windows 10 updates

One of the most controversial decisions Microsoft made in its design of Windows 10 is a fundamental change to the way Windows Update works.

Windows 10 Home offers no way to block security updates and new features. And even the Pro edition has only limited control over updates.

That's sparked an outcry from Windows 10 testers accustomed to years of being able to pick and choose from a menu of updates each month.

Chrome to discard tabs if system memory runs low

Google has added a new discard tab feature to Chromium, the open source version of Google Chrome, that will discard tabs based on an algorithm when physical memory runs low on the device the browser is running on.

Open tabs in a browser require some memory when they are active. While that makes sense for the tab you are viewing right now, and maybe the previous tab, it does not make a whole lot of sense for tabs that you have not touched in a while.

Scrolling in Firefox to get a lot better thanks to APZ

If you run a Nightly version of the Firefox web browser with E10s enabled, you may have noticed that scrolling and zooming improved after you have installed the latest update of that particular version of Firefox.

Nightly is the cutting edge channel of Firefox that gets new feature additions first. It may take up to three release cycles -- three six week periods -- for features to land in the stable version of Firefox. Before they do, they are usually enabled in the developer and beta version first.

What is Wi-Fi Sense and should you be using it?

It can be quite frustrating if friends, family members or colleagues want to access the Internet at your place.

While some routers support guest accounts that improve security somewhat, sharing your password with others is the standard and usually not a good idea.

While you can type it yourself on the device the friend is using, there are programs out there that reveal the password once a connection has been established.

Google to remove Google+ from YouTube and other products

Google announced today that it made the decision to untie the bond between its social networking service Google+ and YouTube. In addition, Bradley Horowitz, VP of Streams, Photo and Sharing mentioned on the official Google Blog that the company would make additional changes to how content is shared, how Google users communication and how company services are used.

Comments on the video hosting and streaming site YouTube no longer require a Google+ account as of today.

Microsoft releases tool to block Windows 10 updates

One of the most controversial features of Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system is its automatic update feature. Especially Home users are affected as updates are pushed out via Windows Update automatically to those systems while Pro and Enterprise users get options to delay the deployment or even block it completely.

KB3074681 highlights why mandatory updates on Windows 10 are not a good idea

If you run the latest insider build 10240 of Windows 10 you may have already received update KB3074681 which is a cumulative security update for Windows 10 that Microsoft released on July 25.

The update installs fine on machines running the operating system but seems to introduce several Explorer related bugs at the same time which users may notice when executing different actions on the system.

Textmarker: Mark text temporarily or permanently in Firefox

Textmarker is an easy to use browser extension for Firefox that allows you to mark text on web pages you visit temporarily or permanently.

Web browsers don't come with options to highlight text on web pages, at least not in their default state.

This may sometimes be necessary or desired, for instance when you use a resource regularly and want to make sure that the most important information are highlighted for better accessibility.

Valve fixed a Steam exploit that allowed anyone to take over accounts

Steam is a popular gaming platform that you use to buy and play games, use community features or a plethora of other features such as a virtual item marketplace or a workshop to which third-party creators can upload items to.

Steam users sign in to the Steam client or website using a username and password combination, and if they have enabled Steam Guard, with a security code in the second step of authentication.
