Commodore Amiga Emulator WinUAE 3.0.0 available

Ah, the Commodore Amiga. One of the greatest home computer systems that was home to some of the best games ever created.

While it is still possible to buy an Amiga on marketplaces like eBay, you may not have enough space at home to do just that.

That's were emulation comes in. While you can argue that emulation cannot mimic the computer 100%, it is better than not using it at all in my opinion.

Plus, it adds several options such as fast load or the emulation of hard drives or floppy drives that make things more comfortable.

WinUAE is probably the best Commodore Amiga emulator out there which emulates most of the features of all Amiga editions Commodore released in the past.

Emulation includes chip sets, drives, serial ports, mouse and joysticks, processors, memory, graphics units and hard drives.

WinUAE 3.0.0 was released in December 2014 by the development team adding various new features to the emulator. This includes support for new hardware like the A590 XT hard drive, CDTV-CR and accelerator boards.

New features are introduced as well in WinUAE 3.0.0. Among them support for connecting two WinUAE instances running on the same PC, support for secondary Z2 RAM boards, turbo-read mode for CDTV and CD32, support for multiple SCSI controllers which can now be active simultaneously, or the new cycle-exact CPU mode.

You can load adf files into the emulator to play them directly on the PC. ADF files can be created by connecting the Amiga to the PC and using specialized tools to dump the data to the file format.

Here are a couple of great resources that offer Amiga ADF file downloads

  • Amiga Future - Large collection of legal games for the Amiga.
  • Amiga Lore - Hosts games that were never released.
  • Dream 17 - All Team 17 games for the Amiga as ADF files.
  • Ami Sector One - The creators state that they have written permission to offer the games on their website. Lists a lot of all-time classic games.
  • Factor 5 - The three games Katakis, R-Type and BC Kid are provided on the official Factor 5 website.
  • Gremlin - Features several games by Gremlin such as Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge or Zool.
  • Old-Skool - Offers classic Amiga demos, diskmags, packs and music for you to download. Demos come in adf format which you can run right in the emulator.

Please note that you need a Kickstart ROM file to run the emulator. You can purchase ROMs legally from Amiga Forever.
