Look up security information about a domain or IP with TargetAnalyser

ThreatAlert is a free program for Windows operating systems that queries several security databases and services on the Internet to reveal information about domain names or IP addresses.

One of the lesser known tasks of webmasters is to make sure that their sites are not blocked by antivirus and security solutions.

I ran into those issues three times in the past ten years and it was always problematic to get it resolved.

 

Even if you are not a webmaster, you may benefit from TargetAnalyser. Maybe you want to make sure a site is legitimate and not malicious before you use it, or after you noticed irregularities while using it.

The program is free and requires the Microsoft .Net Framework. The source code, a graphical user interface version and a console version are offered.

To get started, type or paste a domain name, IP address or MD5 hash in the toolbar at the top and make the correct selection in the menu next to it (if you enter a domain name, make sure you pick domain from the menu and not IP). It seems possible to check pages of domains as well but some of the services used will only look up information about the domain in general or return errors when you do.

Note: MD5 hash can be useful if you already have it and want to monitor changes over time.

TargetAnalyser queries multiple online services and displays results in its interface while it does so. Each service is listed with its name, the information it returned and urls.

A right-click on a line allows you to open the scan url and result url in the default system browser.  The selected service may reveal additional information about the entered domain name or IP address.

The Tools > Providers menu lists all supported providers which are all selected by default. If you don't want to use some uncheck them in the menu to disable them.

Data import and export options are listed under the File menu. The program supports exports to csv, xml and json files.

Verdict

TargetAnalyser is an easy to use program that provides you with a fast security analysis of IP addresses or domains.

The program would benefit from usability improvements, for instance a history feature or bookmark feature to recheck already tested domains or IPs without having to enter them again.

All in all though it is quite the useful tool.
