Play music from various Internet sites with a single music player

If you like to listen to music you have probably noticed already that the Internet is a treasure trove in this regard.

Music is posted in audio or video form on many sites across the Internet which makes it sometimes difficult to play music you are interested in as you may need to use different services for that depending on song availability.

For instance, you may like music videos on YouTube but also use SoundCloud or Pandora for music discovery.

The more services you use the harder it gets to play music you are interested in, especially if you like songs that much that you want to play them over and over again.

Cubic.fm is a new service that provides you with a single player interface for many popular music sites on the Internet.

The concept it uses is not new but it overshadows the majority of alternatives by offering support for a wide variety of sites.

The extension supports more than 20 different websites currently including Facebook, YouTube, Pandora, 8tracks, HypeM and Reddit plus most blogs that publish embedded audio content.

While you can use Cubic using the website by pasting links, it shines when you install the associated Chrome extension.

The extension adds "save to cubic.fm" buttons to any supported website which you can click on to add the song to your Cubic account.

This works flawlessly and instantly, at least on the sites I tested it on. All songs you add are added to the recently saved channel by default.

You can add channels -- offering playlist functionality -- on Cubic and use drag and drop on the site to move songs between channels and rearrange them on the site.

Since all songs get saved indefinitely, you may use the service to build your own music catalog using Internet services.

One downside of this is that songs may become unavailable, for instance if a video gets pulled from YouTube or if the author of a track decides to move it.

The player on the site supports replay and shuffle next to the usual back and forward controls that most players offer.

Please note that you may need to install Adobe Flash in the browser depending on the source. Soundcloud music can only be played for instance if Flash is installed.

Verdict

Cubic offers a straightforward way to collect music from popular online music repositories to play them on a single website for as long and as often as you like without visiting the source site again.

It is necessary to create an account on the site however which you can only do by linking your Google, Facebook or Twitter account to the service which may be a deal breaker for some.
