MiTeC Network Scanner: advanced IP, Port, Netbios and SNMP Scanner

MiTeC Network Scanner is a free advanced scanner for the Windows operating system that supports the scanning of IP and Port ranges as well as advanced features such as running remote commands, supporting SNMP devices, and displaying information about resource shares and services.

The free portable program has no dependencies and is compatible with all recent and not so recent versions of Windows. In addition to that, it is free to use for both private and commercial users.

The iconography used by the program may be confusing at first, as it may not be clear immediately what each item does. While you find text descriptors underneath some icons, that's not the case for all of them.

You may however hover the mouse over an icon to display a short description of it so that you know what they all do after some time of use.

You find three core scanning options under scan on the home tab. Here it is possible to enter an IP address that you want scanned by the application, scan the network neighborhood, or scan the active directory.

Scans are quick and you are always in the loop thanks to the thread status module that displays the current status as well as scan times for each individual address. There you find a stop button on top of that to stop the process at any time.

Devices that respond to the query are listed in the main area. There you find listed a summary of each device at the top, and below that detailed information about the selected device listed in a series of tabs.

Core information listed at the top include the device's IP address and Mac address. The bottom half lists detailed information about the selected device including information about shares, open files, sessions, services, accounts, ports and a lot more provided that those information were retrieved.

Some tabs reveal tools that you need to run for information. The ports tab for instance lets you run a port scan on the selected IP address.

The tools tab in the main interface lists the following options:

  • Detect IP address from host name - Enter a hostname, e.g. ghacks.net, to retrieve its IP address.
  • Who Is - Look up whois information of IP addresses or domain names.
  • Remote Execute - run commands on a target system.
  • Remote Shutdown - shut down or restart a remote system.
  • Wake On Lan.
  • Management Console.

The preferences provide you with options to change detection methods (ICMP, NetBIOS or Port Scan), set Deep Scan parameters, and add credentials directly that are used by the program.

You may edit device information, for instance by adding a description to a device for better recognition, and there are options to export data and to print information.

Closing Words

MiTeC Network Scanner is a useful portable application for the Windows operating system that offers an immense feature set that is clearly aimed at professionals but useful to home users as well.
