Yahoo Video Guide: search for movies and TV shows across streaming services

Yahoo Video Guide is a new application for Android and iOS that provides you with the means to browse and search movies and TV shows across streaming, rental and shopping services in the US.

Yahoo Video Guide prompts you to pick services that you are subscribed to or have access to on first start.  It supports a wide range of US-based services including Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, HBO, Showtime, YouTube, Fox, NBC or Crackle to name a few.

Once you have made your selection and tapped on the continue button, the main application interface is loaded.

It loads featured content right away highlighting new or popular content on the networks and services that you have selected.

You may switch to movies or shows instead to find a show or movie that you are interested in, or use the search to search across all services.

These main areas don't highlight the service the content is available on. That happens once you tap on content that interests you.

There you find information about the services that it is available on, a story synopsis, information about directors and actors, Rotten Tomato rankings, playtime information, its rating, related movies and how much it would cost to rent or buy the show or movie if streaming is not available.

A stream now button becomes available once you have installed required streaming applications on the device. This loads the selected content in the streaming application of choice so that you can start watching it right away.

Another interesting feature that Yahoo packed into the application is the mood picker. What it does basically is suggest movies or shows based on the selected mood(s).

You pick one or multiple of the available moods and Yahoo Video Guide displays a list of suggestions right away. One problem here is that the moods are only visualized by animations but without text which makes it difficult to identify moods.

For instance, the "guy crying" mood lists movies such as The Wolf on Wall Street, Winter Sleep, Wild or Exodus Gods and Kings when selected.

The mood picker supports filters that let you switch between movie and show suggestions, and include rent or purchase options as well in the selection process.

Verdict

Yahoo's Video Guide application lacks several features that would make it comfortable. There is no option to favorite movies or TV shows, actors, or directors, no option to favor one service over another, and no schedule highlighting upcoming shows or movies.

It may be useful for users from the United States who are subscribed to multiple services, who wish to use a program that enables them to search across all of those services, and who watch shows or movies on their Android or iOS device.

In addition, it is only available for US services and not in other regions of the world. Check out the official blog post on the Yahoo blog for additional information and download links.
