KeePass 2.32 brings regular expression search

KeePass 2.32 is a new version of the popular password manager that introduces among other things regular expression search capabilities to the program.

While that may sound intimidating or not useful at all to users who never came into contact with regular expressions before, it introduces new options to the program's search function that are not difficult to use but provide new useful options.

Regular expression searches are enclosed in //, and one useful search option is to have KeePass return results for multiple search terms.

If you cannot remember a username or site name for instance, and don't want to browse the whole password database in an effort to find it, you could search for //term1|term2// to have KeePass return results matching either of the searches.

Obviously, you can expand that by adding pipes and search terms to the search term, e.g. //.de/.net/.org// to return all matching results (usually accounts for domains matching the selected extensions).

Other changes in KeePass 2.32

Keepass 2.32

The new KeePass 2.32 ships with a truckload of new features and improvements over previous versions.

From a security point of view, on systems with .NET 4.5 or higher, secure connections do support TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 now in addition to the previously supported SSL 3 and TLS 1.0.

Another new security feature has been added if the KeePass database is loaded from a URL. You find a new advanced tab in the dialog with the following options:

  • Timeout
  • Pre-Authenticate
  • HTTP/HTTPS/WebDAV: user agent, expect 100-continue responses
  • FTP: Passive

The password manager's auto type functionality has been improved in several ways, including improved compatibility with program windows that handle activation slowly or ignore input until they are ready, and the improved sending of characters that require the AltGr key typically.

Users who use high DPI monitor setups may appreciate enhanced high DPI support for KPScript, higher resolution icons to make them look better on high DPI systems, and improved image and icon shrinking and recoloring.

If you run KeePass using Mono on a Linux system, you may benefit from workarounds in the new version as well that bring back tray icons on Unity or Pantheon desktops (using the application indicator plugin)

I suggest you check out the full changelog of KeePass 2.32 on the developer site as it lists about two dozen additional entries not mentioned here.

How to upgrade to KeePass 2.32

KeePass will inform you on start that a new version is available. A click on the notification opens the KeePass website where the new version can be downloaded from.

Make sure you close KeePass on the system before you install it or replace the data in the folder if you use a portable version of the program instead.

Now You: Which password manager do you use currently?
