WriteYours Windows Text Completion

WriteYours is a new program for Microsoft Windows systems that replaces keywords you enter with text that you have defined previously.

The application is offered as an alpha version currently but it ran fine and stable during tests.

The main idea behind the program is to make the entering of text that you type often more comfortable by assigning keywords to it which you then write instead.

Instead of writing your full address in an email or on a website for instance, you can simply associate it with the keyword add.

Whenever you type add, WriteYours replaces it automatically with your address so that you save time and effort when using the program.

WriteYours offers more functionality than that, as you can choose to add to a phrase you enter instead of replacing it.

While you can create straightforward keyword to phrase pairs, like GHA which expands to Ghacks Technology News, you can also use the program to auto-correct spelling mistakes you make often.

The program ships with a handful of preset keywords that showcase how the app works.  The delete button is not active but you can delete those associations by selecting Phrases > Delete from the menu.

A click on add opens the new phrase dialog which you use to add custom keywords to the WriteYours. These always come in pairs, a keyword that you type in applications and the desired phrase that you want to add to the keyword or replace the keyword with.

Other options that you have for each pair is to make them case sensitive, and to return the caret to the left.

Once you are done adding phrases, you can start testing programs that you use on your system for compatibility.

The program keeps tracks of how many times keywords are used which you may find useful to optimize the list of phrases regularly.

The alpha version was a bit unreliable when it came to that. It worked in Firefox initially for instance but failed after I removed the original phrases from the application. No matter what I would do, I could not get it to work in Firefox again.

Behavior like this is to be expected from an early alpha build which is why we don't rate programs that are not released as stable versions.

You can turn off the application's functionality with a right-click on its system tray icon.

Quite a few programs are available for Windows already that offer similar functionality. There is Phrase Express which is available as a free and paid version, but also TypeText, TwinkiePaste or Word Expander.

WriteYours uses an XML file to save text phrases which means that you can edit the XML file directly as well to add new phrases faster to the program.

A portable version is not provided currently but the author has already confirmed that one will be available soon.
