Google pushes big Datally update for Android

Google released a new version of the company's data compression app Datally for Android yesterday; the update introduces new  features and improves others.

The company launched the Datally application for Android in late 2017. We reviewed the first release version of Datally back in 2017 to give Android users better control over the device's data usage.

The initial version of Datally monitored the data usage on the Android device, offered tips to reduce data usage, and suggested public wireless networks that it picked up to save mobile data.

Datally helped save 21% of data on average according to Google. The new version of the application comes with four new or improved features.

Datally: new features

  • Guest Mode -- Designed to limit data usage when you hand over your device to someone else. It allows you to limit data usage by specifying the maximum amount of data that the borrower may use.
  • Daily Limit -- Daily Limit is for the device owner what Guest Mode is for others. It allows you to set a daily data limit and get warnings when you reach that limit. You can still continue to use data or block data for the remainder of the day.
  • Unused Apps -- Lists applications that use data but have not been used in a while. You can whitelist applications to hide them or start the uninstallation process directly from the unused apps screen. It is interesting to note that Datally lists apps that use data but are have not been used in a while directly after installation.
  • Wi-Fi Map -- The feature extends the Wi-Fi suggestion feature of Datally. It displays a list of public wireless networks on a map. The public wireless access spots are usually operated by businesses.

Datally users may certainly appreciate the new functionality as it adds new options to limit data usage and remove apps that use data even though they may not be used anymore or very infrequently.

Datally requires lots of permissions. While some can be associated with the functionality clearly, while others, like the ability to read SMS, read phone status & identity, or call phone numbers directly, can't.

Closing Words

The new version of Datally is already available on Google Play. Existing users should receive the update through Android's automatic updating system.
