Seagate to launch affordable 8TB Archive consumer Hard Drive

Seagate's new 8 Terabyte Archive HDD hard drive will launch in January 2015.

Storage is one of the few things where regular platter-based drives beat Solid State Drives in. Not only do these hard drives offer storage capacities at the higher end that SSDs don't offer yet, they are also much cheaper when you compare the price per Gigabyte or price per Terabyte.

Block “Seen” messages on Facebook

Whenever you receive a message on Facebook and read it, a notification appears in the sender's chat box that you have seen the message. It states "seen" followed by the time that the message was displayed to you on the Facebook website or Facebook application.

While that may be useful at times, some users may prefer to block seen notifications on Facebook for messages. Maybe they don't want to feel pressure to answer right away, don't have time to answer or have other reasons for not wanting the sender of the message to know that they read it already.

Remove popup overlays on websites with Overlay Blocker for Chrome

So-called overlay popups are a form of advertising on the Internet that many users find highly annoying. These ads pop up on the same site you are on on top of the page's content unlike regular popups, which are launched in a separate window in front or back of the browser window.

Not only are those ads displayed on top of content, it is often also the case that the rest of the page is dimmed to put the full focus on them.

Overlay ads on legitimate sites display a close option, usually an x icon that you can click on to close it to access the underlying content.

One of the channels where this is currently tested is the PBS Idea Channel.

Chromecast’s new Guest Mode explained

Google introduced a new Guest Mode for its Chromecast device in the most recent Android Chromecast app. It allows anyone to cast contents without having to connect to your wireless network to do so. Here is how it works.

Whenever you set up a Chromecast device using the Android application, you need to specify a wireless network and its password that you want the Chromecast device to use.

That's true for the initial setup, but also for any other device, be it phone, tablet or computer, that you want to use to cast to the device.

What to except from the Windows 10 Consumer Event in January

Windows 10 is currently available as a preview designed to give tech enthusiasts, developers and businesses a chance to work with the operating system and give Microsoft feedback about it.

If you have had time to play around with the system, you know that Microsoft made several changes to it which distinguish it from its predecessor Windows 8.

Transfer files directly between servers with FTP Rush

If you need to copy files between two servers, you have a couple of options on how to do so. Many users may download the files from the originating server to the local system first before they upload the contents to the new server.

It is not the fastest option but since most file transfer applications don't support server to server transfers, it is one that is often used.

NoClick for Firefox activates text input fields automatically

Whenever you want to use a text input field on the Internet you have to click in the field before you can start to write. While that may not be a huge issue for some users, for instance if text fields are only used sporadically, it may be a nuisance for others.

How to remove installed Windows Updates and block them afterwards
