Turn any page in a night-friendly version in Chrome and Firefox

The brightness of the computer screen can be an unpleasant one especially at night, right after you wake up or maybe even at all times depending on how sensitive you are.

I remember well having to get up in the night because of a server crash that I had to fix and having to spend minutes adjusting my eyes to the too bright screen before I was able to handle the issue.

Most solutions that you find on the Internet that describe how to burn mkv files to DVD are either outdated -- some resources date back to 2009 and even earlier -- or ads for commercial programs.

Create hyperlapse videos with Microsoft Hyperlapse Pro

Microsoft Hyperlapse Pro is a free application for Windows that enables users to create hyperlapse videos from source videos they have captured previously.

Hyperlapse videos are similar to timelapse videos but with an added spatial component to them. Instead of showing one scene in an accelerated view of time, hyperlapse videos feature a changing camera.

The camera is usually fixed in these videos while it is being moved by foot, bike, car or other means of transportation.

Google discontinues Youtube’s Collections feature

Google just announced that it will discontinue YouTube's Collections feature on May 20, 2015.

Collections allow you to group subscriptions on YouTube into different categories. For instance, you could create a music collection and move all of your music related subscriptions into it.

You have full control meaning that you select the name and the subscriptions that you want to group under a collection.

Collections offer several advantages compared to maintaining individual subscriptions on YouTube:

Mozilla adds Suggested Sites feature to New Tab Page

Mozilla pushed out a New Tab feature with today's Firefox Nightly update that introduces Suggested Sites on the page.

If you are running the most recent version of Firefox Nightly, the cutting edge version of the Firefox browser that receives all feature updates first, you may have been greeted with a prompt introducing a new feature for the browser's New Tab page.

Firefox's New Tab page links to a selection of sites based on several factors. First, it links to sites that you have visited in the past based on popularity.

Windows 10 Home and Pro: automatic updates could become mandatory

If you run a preview build of Windows 10 on a computer currently you may have noticed that it is not possible to modify the operating system's update behavior. The only option you have besides automatic updates is "notify to schedule restart".

Automatic updates download and install important updates automatically without user interaction. The only difference that "notify to schedule restart" offers is that this preferences prompts you to restart the system to finish installing updates.

Google splits Sign-in process into two pages

If you have signed in to your Google account on the Gmail website or other Google properties recently you may have noticed that the sign-in process has changed.

Google split the sign-in process so that it is a two-step process now instead of a single one.

The first page asks for your email address but not the password. You need to click on next first to load the page where you can enter your Google account password to complete it.

Is Microsoft’s Windows 10 Candy Crush Saga deal bad for consumers?

Microsoft announced today that its upcoming operating system Windows 10 will ship with the popular match-3 game Candy Crush Saga.

While I think that the quality of games and apps has improved, especially with the release of Windows 8.1, it is still lacking when compared to Apple's or Google's store.

Microsoft reveals Windows 10 editions

Microsoft's upcoming operating system Windows 10 will ship in three consumer editions and three Enterprise and education editions.

The three consumer editions Home, Mobile and Pro are designed for the demands of end-users, professionals and small businesses.

Windows 10 Home is the equivalent of the Windows 8 edition, a basic edition of Windows 10 that will most likely ship with the majority of devices the operating system comes pre-installed on.
